THE POWER OF THE 1%

THE POWER OF THE 1%

THE POWER OF THE 1%
BY Hanna Griesbeck Garcia

1% might not sound like a lot. But it can hold a lot of power.

The 1% is representative of how little it actually takes to make a difference, if everyone were to give 1% of their resources (be it monetary or time), the magnitude of what we could achieve collectively is immense.
We believe in the power of the 1%. That is why we partnered with Common Goal.

Who are Common Goal?

Common Goal is a movement which aims to “embed purpose at the heart of the football industry and use football as an enabler to inspire a shift in mindset.” The movement was born over twenty years ago with the creation of streetfootballworld and has grown into a global movement now known as Common Goal.

What do they do?

Common Goal has steadily grown into a global movement with the mission of changing our world for the better. They mobilise the football industry - players, clubs, fans, companies - to pledge at least 1% of their revenues to drive progress towards the Global Goals. The 1% then goes towards the 172 strong network of high-impact community organisations working in 103 countries and reaching over 2 million young people. What unites them is their common aim of transforming society into an equal playing field for all. The main focus areas currently are: anti racism, gender equality, peace building, climate action, LGBTQ+ inclusion, youth employability, health and education.
Since January 2021, hylo have been donating 1% of our net revenue. The money has been going to their Social Enterprise Assist project. The funds directed to these projects, by ourselves and other individuals and organisations, has been powering sustainable funding and employment opportunities across 12 of their partner impact organisations.
From now on our 1% will be directed to Common Goals climate action vertical.
This vertical will be focusing on delivering needed education on climate change, develop climate action strategies, advocate for systemic change and drive efforts to decarbonize the industry.

Why Common Goal?

Football is the largest social phenomenon. It captures an audience of three billion people worldwide. That translates into three billion Champions of Tomorrow. With the right tools, opportunities and mindset the industry could be a leading force for good.
Secondly, our founder Michael was a professional footballer - in his pre-hylo life and saw first-hand the power sport can have. You can read more about his story here.
Be it running, football or any other sport. We all have a common goal. Protecting the future of all sports. And it takes a team to do this.
